The History of MACE Alumni Qatar Chapter:

Towards end of 1989, a handful of Maceans , mostly belonging to batches of nineteen sixties and seventies decided to redeem their relationship with their alma mater . Those days Qatar was yet to pick up the drive it could muster later towards development and understandably so, number of expatriates including professional engineers was much less compared to other gulf states. But against the prevailing odds less than a dozen of our engineers gathered together and decided to form Qatar chapter of MACE Alumni.

Officially the inaugural function which was attended by all the family members as well, was conducted in Hotel Sofitel . Mr. N. Govindan Kutty (1972 E) and R. Radhakrishnan (1968 E) were the first President and Secretary respectively. In the initial years it was well served as a social platform to interact between the members and their families and at least gathered once in three months without fail.

The contact with parent body was well laid. Although the newly formed chapter was with less members, our chapter could make a record venturing out for scholarships for poor students of the college in the following years, first among all existing chapters, national or overseas then, while Mr. Issac was the principal. Interaction with other alumni organizations of other engineering colleges from Kerala –limited to 6 those days- was made and many times inter chapter sports and cultural programmes were conducted. Membership continued to increase but in trickle. Regardless, the initial years saw the activities of the chapter to be warm, enjoyable and colourful among the members.

Towards end of the last century and thereafter Qatar was poised to grow under the wise leadership of HH Sh. Hamad Bin Khalifa Althani ,Emir of Qatar. So many development programmes- social, commercial, industrial, cultural- were successfully launched. Many Maceans from India and elsewhere came to the country to take part actively in nation building. From a sleepy small town, Doha emerged to be a busy metropolis. From the back seat of the region, State of Qatar took the front seat and thanks to the wisdom of the rulers, State of Qatar became the richest country with highest per capita income.

During these years activities of the chapter went up to raising charity funds for our fellow alumni who were in immediate requirements of medical treatment. Such initiatives not only made ties stronger between members of the chapter, but also brought a feeling of being in a family in all of us. We proved several times that, we care for our MACE family.

The new century ushered a flow of Maceans to Qatar, a trend which continues. With 2022 FIFA and 2030 VISION in place, Qatar is on track to accelerate the growth further. All of us being engineers primarily, more than an opportunity, it is our duty to support these noble causes which will transform the country to further prosperity and peace.
